PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Hilbert Men's Volleyball earned their second Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory this afternoon over Carlow University (0-5).
The Hawks finished the three-set match (25-16, 25-19, 26-24) with 45 kills and nine service aces, averaging 15 kills and three aces per set.
Alex Overhoff recorded 16 kills with only two hitting errors (.519), but it was
Mehkai Francis who led with a .857 attack percentage, collecting six kills off seven attempts without committing a hitting error.
Tyler Hassell also performed well, scoring 12 points off nine kills, two service aces and one solo block.
Brad Converse filled the stat sheet with five kills, one assist, and game-highs - five service aces and 10 digs, while
Austin Chandler recorded 37 assists.
- Hilbert took control early but after facing a 7-6 margin, Francis (3) and Chris Smith (1) started a run and combined for four consecutive kills. The Hawks extended their lead to 20-11 and rolled to the 25-16 victory.
- The second set was much closer with both teams trading sideouts through a 12-11 Hilbert lead. Converse strung three straight service aces together and Overhoff finished the five-point run with a kill setting the 17-11 score. Then, leading 20-16, Smith and Brennon Rettig each earned kills while Overhoff finished the scoring at the net for the 25-19 win.
- Carlow started the third set with purpose and built a 4-0 lead. The Celtics extended their hold to six points multiple times before they held an 18-10 advantage. Hilbert rallied back earning 11 points off kills, a pair of service aces (Chandler, Hasell) and a solo block by Hasell. Overhoff was the steady force down the stretch, when he took Hilbert from a 22-24 score to the 26-24 final, fueled by four consecutive kills for the win.
Hilbert (6-13, 2-3 AMCC) returns to the Hafner Recreation Center for back-to-back games this week. The Hawks will face Thiel College Wednesday, March 27th with 7:30 pm first serve. The program will then honor their three seniors –
Austin Chandler,
Alex Overhoff and
Chris Smith – prior to their Saturday, March 30th game against Mount Aloysius (12 pm start).
