BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Hilbert College Men's Volleyball team will advance to the 2023 AMCC Post-Season Tournament even though they slipped in a 3-0 loss to Geneva College this afternoon.
Geneva earned two fast first sets (25-13, 25-11) before the Hawks put up a fight in set three (25-23).
But based on the results of the other AMCC games which were played today, the Hawks move on!
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hilbert earned 28 points off 21 kills (-.039 ) four service aces, and three blocks. Hilbert was also credited with 20 assists and 51 digs in the three-set match against the Golden Tornadoes.
Geneva recorded 35 kills (.238), seven service aces and eight blocks which totaled their 50 team points.
- Geneva, leading 15-11 in the opening set, used an eight point run to pull away with the 25-13 victory. The Hawks earned a pair of service aces and two kills in the first game.
- The middle set mirrored the first, close game early until the hosts stacked six points together which built an 18-7 margin. Five kills early in the set kept the Hawks involved on the scoreboard.
- Hilbert played with much more confidence and led most of the third set, but the Golden Tornadoes hung around. Trailing 12-8, Geneva used a 6-2 run which knotted the set at 14-14. The Hawks maintained control on the scoreboard and stretched their lead back to 19-15. Geneva inched their way back taking their first lead 23-22 and rallied for the 25-23 match victory. Hilbert recorded 14 kills and two aces in the final set.
Alex Overhoff led with nine kills (.240) and added 10 digs.
Luis Garcia earned team-high honors with 13 digs and
Ryan Levcik dished 17 assists.
UP NEXT
The AMCC Men's Volleyball league is divided into two divisions and the top three teams in the North Division and in the South Division will advance to play-offs.
Hilbert (9-15) continues into the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Postseason Tournament for the first time in program history!
First Round Games: North #3 Hilbert will travel to South #2 St. Vincent College and South #3 Hiram will travel to North #2 Thiel College Tuesday, April 11st; North #1 Penn State Behrend and South #1 Geneva earned a First Round bye.
Penn State Behrend, the overall No. 1 seed in the league, will host the semifinals and Championship game next Friday and Saturday, April 14
th and 15
th.
