Jonathan Johnson Named Assistant Head Football Coach / Defensive Coordinator

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Head Coach Ted Egger is pleased to introduce Jonathan Johnson as his Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator. Johnson and Egger worked together previously at Hocking College and Pearl River Community College, and they are ready to hit the ground running as they continue to build the Hilbert College Football program.

"Coach Johnson brings a tremendous amount of experience, stability, and energy to our program," Head Coach Ted Egger said, "He has been a Defensive Coordinator at the Division I level and will bring an attacking style to our defense. Jonathan has proven to be an excellent recruiter and developer of young men. He is going to be a tremendous asset to our college."

Johnson played college football at Division III Belhaven University (Jackson, MS) and was a defensive end for the Blazers. In 2011, his junior year, he was credited with 23 tackles in eight games (3.5 for loss).  He then began his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater in 2012 working with the defensive line before transitioning to tight ends/fullbacks in 2013.

From 2014-16, Johnson served as Tight ends/Fullback Coach at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, winning a South Division Championship before joining Stetson University as Defensive Line Coach/Recruiting Coordinator (2016-218).  While at Stetson he also worked with the special teams unit and assisted with the Hatters' national recruiting footprint.

After his first stint at Stetson, Coach Johnson linked up with Coach Egger at Pearl River Community College where he served as Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Line Coach from 2018-2019. They then transitioned to Hocking College together, and Jonathan served as Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator in 2020.

In 2021 Johnson headed back to Stetson University as the Linebackers Coach/Academic Coordinator before being promoted to Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers coach in 2022. This past season coach Johnson's defense finished #3 in FCS in Interceptions, #4 in turnovers gained, and #11 in passing defense. He mentored two student-athletes who finished among the leaders in interception nationally.  In addition, he coached a linebacker who finished third in FCS in tackles.

"I'd like to thank Dr. Brophy, Tim Seil, and Ted Egger for this incredible opportunity," said Johnson.  "I am excited to get to work with Coach Egger on building Hilbert College Football into a program that the school and community will be proud of. We are going to play an attacking style of defense that plays fast and takes the ball away. I can't wait to get started."

The Covington, Georgia, native earned his Bachelor of Science in Sports Administration in 2013 from Belhaven University. He went on to get a Master of Science in Sports Administration in 2015 from Belhaven as well.
