Volleyball Takes Down Wells In Three

AURORA, N.Y.  – The Hilbert College Men's Volleyball team improved to 2-3 in AMCC play after they earned a 3-0 victory over Wells College tonight.

The Hawks (4-10) rolled in each set against the 0-8, 0-4 Express, first-year AMCC members.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hilbert built a 5-1 lead, earning four of their first five points off kills and a service ace.  The Hawks extended their hold at 13-6 before the Express pulled within four (13-9).  Hilbert put the game away off, fueled by six kills and a pair of service aces for the 25-14 win.  The Hawks earned 15 kills and five service aces in the first set.
  • Hilbert earned their first three points, but then benefited from a trio of Express errors that led to a 7-3 lead.  Three consecutive attacks for Hilbert converted into kills (10-5) and once Hilbert had a side out again, the Hawks posted a kill, back-to-back service aces and force a Wells timeout with a 13-6 score.  Five more kills and an additional Hilbert service ace led to another Express timeout (18-8).  Wells added five straight points, three given to them by Hilbert which led to a Hawks timeout.  Hilbert put the second set away (25-18) with two kills, one more service ace and a block assist.  The Hawks added 12 more kills and five more service aces in the middle set.
  • Wells took a 3-2 lead before Hilbert used a six-point run setting the 8-3 margin and an Express timeout.  The Hawks continued to execute and stretched their lead (13-4) before Wells made it a 13-8 game.  Wells rallied, made it a 17-15 game forcing a Hilbert timeout. The hosts returned to the court and scored back-to-back service aces to knot the game at 17-all.  Both teams posted kills before the Hawks pulled away with a five point run as they inched to a 25-20 match victory.
The  Hawks earned 59 points, 42 kills, (.305), 14 service aces, three blocks, 39 assists and 45 digs while limiting the Express to 30 points, 23 kills, four  aces, 18 assists and 33 digs to the Lions.

Chris Laboy led a balanced attack with 11 kills (.440), Brad Converse tossed down nine (.615) and Alex Overhoff added eight (.500).  Ryan Levcik and Austin Chandler shared setting duties and were credited with 18 and 12 respectively.  Converse (4), Overhoff (4) and Laboy (3) combined for 11 of Hilbert's 14 service aces.
