Hawks Move On To The Championship

Hilbert's men's soccer team earned a 7-3 victory over Villa Maria College this afternoon in the second game of the Hilbert Tournament.

The Hawks put on an all-around wonderful performance and earned the program's first match victory in 70 games.

Head Coach Jonny Black on the game: "It's a great way to start of the season and I'm very excited. Glad to see that everyone got quality minutes and fought through the heat together."

How It Happened
  • Villa Maria struck first in this match off a goal by Fabrizio Ubilua with a nice finish with his right foot into the bottom right of the goal.
  • Just a minute later Chris Smith received a pass from Hector Harris and placed it bottom right tying the game at 1-1.
  • This began a string of Hilbert goals by a few different players. Next up Jason Vullo scored two back-to-back goals assisted by Carter Burke and Hector Harris which put the Hawks up 3-1.
  • Before the first half could come to an end Beckham Blair scored two goals assisted by Josh Grugnale and John Schroth. In between these two goals Carter Burke buried one into the bottom left hand side of the goal off a ball from Reese Tomporowski's corner kick.
  • Villa was not done fighting yet answering back in the beginning of the second half with a penalty shot goal scored by Kade Streak. He struck the ball into the bottom left corner to pull them within four.
  • Beckham Blair then added another to his total in the 64th minute making it a hat trick with a shot to the bottom right corner of the net.
  •  Fabrizio Ubilua scored his second of the game to the bottom right hand corner and finished the day's offensive production.
 
Game Notes
  • Hilbert throughout the competition built up a 33-15 shot advantage and also a 5-2 corner advantage.
  • Logan Peck made five saves on the backend for the Hawks.
  • Beckham Blair and Jason Vullo led the Hawks in shots on goal with five and four, respectively.  
  • Chris Smith followed close behind with two.
  • Head Coach Jonny Black used a balanced attack, giving 20 players minutes in the match.
 
Up Next

The Hawks (1-0) next match will take place tomorrow, September 3, when they take on 1-0 Bryant and Stratton (ROCH) in the Hilbert Tournament Championship Game (12:30 pm).  The Bobcats earned at 5-nill victory over Penn State Greater Allegheny in the opening game this afternoon.  

Villa Maria and PS Greater Allegheny will kick-off at 10 am on the Hawks Varsity Field.
