Volleyball Celebrates Senior Day Against Pitt-Greensburg

HAMBURG, N.Y.  – The Hilbert College Women's Volleyball team honored their two seniors prior to today's AMCC match against Pitt-Greensburg.

Graduate-student Ashley Page and senior Casandra Thompson were joined by their families before the first serve.

Greensburg (2-19, 1-7) rallied from a 2-0 deficit and forced the extra fifth set before winning the match in five.

The Hawks (4-21, 0-7) and Greensburg completed their final match of the 2022 season and will not advance into the AMCC postseason tournament which begins next week.

 HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hilbert earned 58 points, 40 kills, 11 service aces, seven blocks, and 66 digs while Greensburg collected 61 points, 46 kills, four blocks, and 58 digs.
  • Michaela Rice led with seven kills but she had support from Maria Spinelli, Katie Kociszewski and Emily Garnett who each added six at the net.  Jaden Helbig assisted on 32 of Hilbert's 37 kills and Garnett led with a team-high three aces.
  • The Hawks two seniors led with 21 (Page) and 15 digs (Thompson) as they kept plays alive and rallies rolling.
The story of the match was momentum and how often it switches within each set.

Pitt-Greensburg 23, 16, 25, 25, 15
Hilbert 25, 25, 20, 18, 12
  • In the first set, neither team built a larger than four point lead until the Bobcats built a 14-10 advantage.  Hilbert rallied, knotted the game and rolled to a 20-15 lead before UPG pulled within one (23-24).  The Hawks pulled the first set win off a Bobcat error.
  • Hilbert jumped out to a 10-5 advantage and then stretched it to 21-10.  Greensburg made an effort for a comeback, scoring five consecutive points but the Hawks played confidently and earned the 25-16 set.
  • Greensburg scored the first point but consecutive side outs set the 2-2 score.  The Bobcats then found the style and led 14-12 until Hilbert jumped back into the game taking a 15-14 lead.  The score was knotted two more times before Greensburg pulled away with a 25-20 win.
  • The Hawks found themselves down 6-0 before the put two points on the scoreboard.  A five-point Hilbert run, evened the score at 10-all but that quickly disappeared after the Bobcats went on their own five point swing to build enough space to take the fourth set 25-18 and force game 5.
  • Pitt-Greensburg went on a five-point run at the start of the final shortened set, and held a 6-2 lead before the Hawks woke up.  Hilbert benefited from five Greensburg miscues to take a 7-6 and an 11-8 lead.  Greensburg rallied and took a 12-11 advantage then outscored the hosts 3-1 for the final 15-12 win.
