ALFRED, N.Y. – The 2021 Hilbert College softball team survived an intense 14-day AMCC game schedule which concluded with an 8/9 Play-In, best-of-3 series against Alfred State College this afternoon.
 
Making the program's second postseason appearance since 2018, the Hawks suffered a 4-2 loss in the noon game before they dropped a 9-3 defeat in the nightcap.

HIGHLIGHTS
 
Mattison Arnett finished the day with 3 RBIs.  She was joined by Melanie Basile, Victoria Grayson and Rebecca Marmorato with doubles during the day.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1:
 

• Arnett's double in the third inning lifted the Hawks to a 2-1 advantage plating Melanie Basile and Victoria Grayson.
• The Pioneers, with two runners on and two outs against them, manufactured three runs off two hits for the lead in the bottom of the 4^th.
• During the 7-inning game, Hilbert earned 8 hits but left that same number of runners on base.
• Arnett tossed the full 7-inning game, struck out five, walked three with one earned run.

 
GAME 2:

• The game was scoreless until the Hawks tapped a run in the top of the 3^rd when Grayson's RBI ground-out scored Rebecca Marmorato.
• The Pioneers again found themselves down with a 2-out situation but rallied back for a 5-run push and took over lead 5-1 heading into the 4^th.
• Alfred State connected for four hits and turned those into three additional runs in the 4^th.
• Basile doubled to start the 5^th, and Grayson singled to center field scoring McNamara.
• Arnett then hit an infield single plating Basile to end the 2-run scoring spurt for the Hawks.
• They held the Pioneers in check for one series, but gave up a solo run in the bottom of the 6^th.
• Hilbert went three deep in the top of the 7^th and dropped the play-off game.
• Marmorato finished the game in the circle with three hits and two earned runs over 2.2 innings.
• Hannah Coken, Basile and Grayson all earned two hits while Basile, Grayson and Marmorato were all credited with doubles in the nightcap.

Alfred State moves into the quarterfinal game at No. 1 Penn State Behrend Sunday, May 9.
