PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Hilbert softball team finished their first series of back-to-back-to-back games this weekend when they traveled to La Roche University for the third double header in as many days.
The Hawks exploded for a 13 runs in the night cap to earn their first win of the season as they split the AMCC series with the Redhawks.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Today's 13 runs were the most scored by Hilbert since April 28, 2018 when the Hawks beat Mt. Aloysius 17-15.
- Hilbert took control in the night cap, beginning in the second inning. Seven different players knocked in runs and 10 hits fueled the 11 RBIs.
- Melanie Basile went 2 for 3, 1 RBI and scored three runs in the Hawks first win of the 2021 season.
- Makenna Smith was credited with three stolen bases, earned 2 hits and scored one run over the course of two games.
- Victoria Grayson earned two doubles today, one in each game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 2:
- The Hawks manufactured eight runs in the 2nd inning, tacked on three more in the 5th and finished the day with a pair in the 7th.
- After three walks loaded the bases in the top of the 2nd, Kaitlyn Barone reached on an error which scored Mattison Arnett and Emma McNamara.
- Smith earned an RBI single then stole second base as Barone stole home.
- Another walk placed Basile on first prior to Grayson's RBI double which scored Smith. McNamara's walk loaded the bags again which set the table for Sydnea Schiedel's 3-run double.
- La Roche added one run on the score board in the bottom of the second, held the Hawks scoreless in the third and scored two more runs in the 3rd, slicing the difference to 8-5.
- The Hawks made more noise in the 5th, scoring three more runs. Three hits turned into a run scored with a two-out count. A wild pitch and another single, hit to the outfield, gave enough room for two more runs scored lifting Hilbert to an 11-5 lead.
- Each team traded one-hit innings before the Redhawks offense woke up. La Roche manufactured two runs in the 6th and 7th, but the Hawks had enough space to take the win.
- Schiedel's one double led the three runs scored and Kaitlyn Barone earned 2 RBIs while scoring two runs herself in th eight cap. McNamara was credited with one stolen base and two runs scored.
- Budzsizewski, who scored one run, earned 2RBIs off one hit, earned her first collegiate win going 2.1 innings in the circle with four earned runs off seven hits. Rebecca Marmorato finished the game with 4.2 innings pitched, one strke out, four earned runs off seven hits.
GAME 1:
- La Roche built a 5-0 lead after two innings and added three more runs in the fourth.
- Grayson's RBI double in the 5th sliced the margin to seven runs, but the Redhawks tacked another run on in the bottom of the 6th to earn a 9-1 win.
- La Roche moved runners around the bags off short hits while the Hawks sent no more than four batters to plate each inning until the top of the 5th.
- Mckenna Smith earned a hit in the 3rd and Sydnea Schiedel did the same in the 5th. Stepping to the plate as a pinch-hitter in the 5th, Victoria Grayson's late-game double knocked in Schiedel's solo run.
- Mattison Arnett covered the first three innings, stuck out one, walked four and gave up five earned runs before Hannah Coken finished the game striking out one along with giving up five hits.
UP NEXT
The Hawks have a break from competition tomorrow, but swing back into action Tuesday and Wednesday April 27/28 at Gowanda High School. Hilbert will host Alfred State College the 27th and Medaille the 28th.
Both double header AMCC games will begin at 3:00 pm and thanks to an upgraded hot-spot connection all four games will be live streamed.
