Hawks Volleyball Challenges St. Vincent In Third Set

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College men's volleyball team almost pulled-out a third-set victory but Saint Vincent College survived the Hawks' rally and claimed a 3-0 win in the Hafner Recreation Center this afternoon.

Hilbert scored their highest set point-total this season, pushing the Bearcats to the finish line in the third set.

HIGHLIGHTS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • St. Vincent crept away in the opening set, stretching an 8-5 lead into a 15-5 scored just minutes later.  Two kills and two service aces later, they held a 24-8 advantage and won the match (25-9) at the net.
  • Argy's kill early in the second set brought Hilbert within two points (3-5) and Wloch's kill mid-way through the game set the 6-13 score.  But St. Vincent continued to drill away from the service line which carried them to victory (25-14).
  • St. Vincent gave Hilbert their first five points of the third set until Stephen Houghton's kill created a 6-13 match.  Five consecutive Bearcat errors pulled the Hawks within two points (11-13) but St. Vincent rebounded with back-to-back-to-back service aces.  Suter's kill forced a 14-20 score and three more Bearcat errors along with William Argy's service ace sliced the difference to three (18-21).  The Hawks' attack error combined with a kill and service ace by SVC pushed the guests to 24 points.  Yet Houghton's kill and Hilbert's defensive ability to extend play forced the Bearcats into two more errors, which gave Hilbert their most points of the season (21-24).  St. Vincent claimed the set and match victory from the front row with a kill to the opposite corner.
