MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – A long rain delay welcomed Hilbert back at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic this morning on day three of their softball team's spring break training trip.

The Hawks took the field at 1:30, four hours late, and played their most competitive game but slipped in a 6-2 defeat to Gwynedd Mercy University.

The start time of the 1:30 pm Wilkes University game was also affected by the morning's weather pattern that blew through the east coast.  This story will be updated

GAME ONE

The Griffins connected with a double to start the second inning and scored off a single RBI off the third batter.  Then, with two outs, and two runners on base, another single RBI pushed two more runs across the plate.

Bailey Budziszewski poked Hilbert's first home run of the 2020 season to lift Hilbert in the dugout and slice the margin to 3-1 in the bottom of the 4th.

GMU tacked on their own 2-run homer in the 5th building a 5-run lead which held until the bottom of the 7th.

Alyssa Barnas hit an RBI single , scoring Victoria Lakeman but the Hawks ran out of time for a big comeback.

Budziszewski went 2-for-3, Lauryn Scott went 1-for-3, hitting a double and pinch hitter Marisa McIntyre earned a hit in her solo appearance.    

GAME TWO

Wilkes University put the nightcap out of reach after plastering 15 runs on the board in the bottom of the 1st.  

Alyssa Barnas, Kaitlyn Barone and Maia Delaney (RBI) each earned hits in the 3rd inning to place one run in the books in the loss.

Marisa McIntyre took the loss in the circle while Kaitlyn Barone closed the game in relief.

Hilbert will be able to relax from competition March 4 and return to action March 5th with another series against Midway (1:30 pm) and Cedar Crest (3:30 pm).  Fans should remember that all games can be viewed via free live stream video.  Go to the softball team's game schedule page for the links.
