HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's volleyball team opened their 2018 season with a 3-0 loss at Houghton College tonight. The Highlanders, playing their 5th match of the season, slowly pulled away from Hilbert in the first two sets before they sprinted to the third set/match win.
The Hawks stayed within reach in the first set, but allowed Houghton to go on a 5-point run, taking a 25-13 win. Hilbert, trailing 10-16, gave up eight unanswered points in the 25-11 middle set defeat.
Junior
Torianna LeWand forced a 2-2 score in the 3rd set and helped the Hawks notch another even score (3-3) before the hosts closed the match with a 25-5 tilt.
LeWand finished the non-conference match with a team-high four kills, two service aces, and four digs.
Sophomore
Sara Trzepkowski was credited with six assists.
The Hawks ended the game with a -0.208 hitting percentage while the Highlanders connected at a 0.350 percent clip with 32 kills.
Hilbert gets their first taste of a multi-day tournament when they travel this weekend to the Keuka Invite Friday and Saturday. The Hawks will battle SUNY Canton September 7 at 7pm and then return the next day for a 1pm game against Alfred State and the hosts, Keuka at 3pm. Only the 3pm game will have live
