Softball Drops Opening Game at AMCC Tourney, Returns to Diamond May 5

BUFFALO, N.Y. –  The Hilbert College softball team committed back-to-back errors and suffered a 2-0 loss to Mt. Aloysius in the first game of the 2018 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship tournament.

Today marked the first time in 13 seasons that the softball program extended their season into playoffs and, even though they lost to the Mounties, their season continues tomorrow, May 5 in Erie, Pa.  Hilbert will battle the loser of the #4 D'Youville vs. #5 Penn State Altoona game which is being played at Penn State Behrend's campus.

Jenna Castricone, in the three hole, earned the first hit of the game at the top of the 1st, and the Hawks waited until the third inning when Hannah Prenoveau bunted to get on base.

Neither team could manufacture a run until the bottom of the 4th inning when the Mounties' first two batters took a base off fielding errors.  A ground-rule double scored the first run and a shallow infield single scored the second run.

The Hawks had two runners in scoring position in the top of the 5th.  Natel Papasergi singled to center field and Prenoveau reached first on an error but the inning ended with a strike out.

Rachel Allan took care of the next six Mt. Aloysius batters spaced over two innings while the Hawks left one stranded on base before the start of the 7th inning.

Mt. Aloysius moved into the winner's bracket after Hilbert's bottom of the order failed to take a base.

Hannah Ruby tossed a 3-hit victory while striking out five Hawks and takes her Mounties into the winners bracket to face Medaille in a 3:30 pm game this afternoon.

Rachel Allen did not allow an earned run, struck out two in a six inning game.
