BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's lacrosse team opened their season at D'Youville College this afternoon in what was supposed to be the Hawks' home opener.
The Spartans built a 6-0 lead by intermission and stretched the margin to 13-3 by the final horn in the first Buffalo Cup game of the season.
Hilbert closed the game with 23 shots, taking 16 in the first 30-minutes of action. The Hawks scored three second-half markers off four shots on goal. D'Youville's goalie survived the first half making 11 saves and finished the game with 12.
Hilbert won seven of the 18 draw controls and attempted four free position shots but came up empty on all of them.
Ashley Repine produced her seventh career double digit saves effort. The sophomore goalie made 10 saves in the first half and finished with 14 for the day.
Brooklynn Gormel beat the Spartan keeper once off a team-high 10 shots. She also hustled to six ground balls, caused a pair of turnovers and won two draw controls.
Freshmen
Aaryonah Vaughn and
Sam Lawicki each scored their first collegiate goal today.
Josephine Ban added an assist, four draw controls and three ground balls.
Natassia West and
Alayna DeFazio (team high three caused turnovers) scooped four ground balls each.
D'Youville scored the first goal in the second half, building a 7-0 lead just 18-seconds after intermission. Gormel won the ensuing draw control and sprinted to frame, putting Hilbert on the score board at 29:30.
Senior
Stephanie Cartonia, another first-year player, feed Lawicki for the Hawks second maker (16:16) and Ban led Vaughn to the crease for Hilbert's final goal of the game with just under three minutes left in the game.
Hilbert returns to action this weekend Saturday, March 17th when they host Hiram College. Stay tuned for site changes since Hilbert's home field is under several inches of snow.
