Women's Lacrosse Sets New Win Record and Moves On to the AMCC Showcase Final

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's lacrosse team likes to win in the rain.

The Hawks earned a 23-9 victory over D'Youville College in the 1st Round game of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC)  Showcase Tournament under steady rain and on a very slippery field.

With the win, Hilbert moves to the championship game in Steubenville, OH against Franciscan University on Sunday, May 7.

Emily Gawlak led the hosts with 11 points and Nikki Schneider added eight.  Ashley Repine was credited with nine saves, several off free position shots, to lift Hilbert to the win.

The Hawks earned their fourth victory and established a new program win record at 4-9 on the season.

Hilbert held advantages in shots (40-26), and almost doubled the Spartans in shots on goal (32-18), but both teams played even the rest of the way.

Nikki Schneider and Marisa Huffman combined for four of Hilbert's six goals in the first 22 minutes of the game.  The Spartans responded with a 3 for 1 trade-off, setting a 7-3 score with almost eight minutes left in the first half.

Gawlak scored a pair of unassisted goals while Huffman, Schneider and Taylor Corts beat the Spartan goalie before intermission which built a 12-4 score.

D'Youville scored three of the first four goals in the second period which cut the difference to five goals but the hosts, wearing  white and dirt, put the game away (20-7) with seven unanswered goals with 17-minutes remaining.

Schneider led all scorers with seven goals (1 assist) while Gawlak combined six goals with five assists and 12 draw controls.

Brooklynn Gormel went 2-for-3 in free position shots collecting five goals and a team-high seven ground balls as Huffman closed her career at home with three markers.

Calista Mis, who shared a game-high two caused turnover stat with Nickee Thibault, scored her first collegiate goal late in the game.

Hilbert will travel to Franciscan's campus Sunday, May 7 for a 2pm game. The Barons sport a 8-7 overall record but have won six of their last seven games.
