HAMBURG, N.Y. – Tyler Nicoloff's 11 points led the Hilbert College men's lacrosse team to a 18-2 victory over Cobleskill in NEAC action this afternoon.
The Hawks controlled the pace of the game gaining edges in ground balls (49-20), turnovers (14-32), shots (56-20) and clears (21/22 vs 11-18).
Cobleskill claimed one more face-off victory (12-11) than Hilbert.
Both teams took a wet field and played through some sloppy patches in the grass which developed from the pregame rain. They then had to outlaste the wind which picked up in the final quarter.
The Hawks scored the opening goal at 13:39 before Cobleskill took an early lead after back-to-back scores by 5:50.
Hilbert closed the quarter with a 5-goal run and continued their onslaught until the final horn.
Nicoloff combined his five goals with his six assists for the Hawks. He is now just one assist shy of tying the program's Single Season assist record (38) which was set in 2013 by Sean Purtill. Nicoloff was one of four players to get four ground balls during the game.
Matthew Simon followed with four goals and two assists and
Joshua Schindler turned out to be the final multi-goal scorer (two/one assist).
Justin DeLaRosa was 7-for-11 in the face-off circle and turned one victory into a give-and-go cut to the cage converting a Nicoloff pass-back into a goal.
Nathaniel Hyman led all players with six ground balls while
John Lobdell and
Tyler Balsavage chased on defense and cause havoc for the Tigers with four ground balls each and three and two caused turnovers, respectively.
Adam Zawadzki (6-4) made three saves in the first 30 minutes and
Joseph Stevenson added eight more in the second half.
The Hawks will return to action this coming week against the cross-town, NEAC rival Medaille College April 18 at 4pm on the Hawks varsity field.
