KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's volleyball team opened their 2016 season with a split decision today, but coach
Christopher Krueger is happy with the development of his squad already so early in the season.
The Hawks claimed a 3-0 victory over SUNY Delhi in the first game of the tri-match, and kept the winning streak going with a 1st set win against Keuka College. But the Wolves rallied back and took the next three straight sets for the 3-1 win over the Hawks.
Freshman
Ashley Repine finished the day hitting at a .529 clip while freshman
Torianna LeWand led the offense with 11 kills (1.57 kps). The Hawks have more options at the net as five players collected eight kills or more today.
Kamalei Lene was credited with 39 of the team's 41 assists and five players earned multiple service aces led by LeWand's five.
Amanda Binder and Repine collected five total blocks each, and LeWand and
Morgan Ott led with 18 digs each (2.57 dps).
In the morning match, Hilbert jumped out to a 25-14 victory then followed with a pair of 25-18 sets.
LeWand led with nine kills for a team who earned a total of 28 in the match. The Hawks picked up eight points off service aces, but they also gave away 10 points in service errors.
Victoria Siracuse (12) and
Kamalei Lene (11 digs, 22 assists) reached double digit digs.
Keuka doubled-up the Hawks at the net passing for a 43-20 advantage in kills. Hilbert took another 25-14 opening victory but fell in two close sets. The Wolves won 25-22, 25-12 and 25-20 for the win.
Neither team hit well as each almost matched their kills with hitting errors. The Hawks gave the Wolves 18 points in errors and hosts handed Hilbert 31 hitting error points.
Serena Tecl led Hilbert with six kills as she and Repine (five kills, .714) were the only pair to hit in the positive. Lene assisted on 17 kills and LeWand and Ott reached double digit digs with 11 and 10 respectively.
The Hawks (1-1) return to action next Friday when they travel to Hiram College for a late afternoon tri-match. Hilbert will battle the hosts at 4pm and then challenge Marietta College at 8pm.
