Hawks Dominate Medaille for Big NEAC Win

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Matthew Simon's 8 points lifted Hilbert College to a 17-2 lopsided NEAC victory over Medaille College in men's lacrosse tonight as the Hawks dominate play on the field.

With the win, Hilbert improved to 3-3 in NEAC play and sit in 6th place behind a 3-way tie for third as three teams have two losses each.  The Hawks win kept Medaille in the winless cateogory on the season at 0-9.

Hilbert jumped ahead with a 10-1 half time score and slowed their pace in the second half outscoring the Mavericks by a 7-1 margin.

Brenden Deady and Adam Zawadzki shared time between the pipes evenly with Deady picking up another win with three first half saves.  Zawadzki deflected eight shots while each keeper allowed one goal.

Nine different Hawks found the back of the net with Simon and Patrick Crangle scoring four goals each.  Simon and James Duffy were good teammates as each of them set-up four teammates for scores.  Duffy finished with five points as did Crangle, who assisted once.

Andrew Tirabassi tallied twice and assisted on a pair and Mark O'Neill was the other multi-goal scorer.

Hilbert led by only four shots (30-26) but were on-target with a 28-13 advantage of shots-on-goal.   The Hawks forced 32 Medaille turnovers and were credited with 23 caused turnovers as a team.

Connor Harman and Simon led with three caused turnovers each and Duffy, Chase Harmon, Bryan Binaxas, John Lobdell, Deady and Austin Good were all credited with two caused turnovers each.

The Hawks dominated play, more than doubling-up Medaille in ground balls.  Hilbert went in the books with 56 ground balls while limiting the Mavs to 27.

Nathaniel Hyman led all players with seven ground balls and Aaron Valino trailed with five.  Connor Harman, Travis Hicks, and Mark O'Neill each chipped in four as 20 Hilbert players finished with at least one ground ball under the lights.

The only stat Medaille was close with Hilbert was on face-offs where the Hawks won 11 of 21, one more than Medaille.

Hilbert jumped ahead 6-0 by 3:28.  Deady fell asleep only one time and let in Medaille's only first half goal with 1:55 left in the first period.  The Hawks continued to pour it on with 11-straight goals over the next three periods before Medaille found the back of the net with less than three minutes left as the last goal of the day.

Hilbert shared the ball well tonight with 14 assists on 17 goals.  The only player to score back-to-back hits was Matthew Simon.  His goal with 0:23 left in the second period paired with his man-up goal at 14:31 to start the third quarter.

Hilbert returns to Hamburg this weekend when they host Cazenovia College, 3-2 in league action.  The Hawks then will close their season with a mid-week, April 27 Senior Day celebration against the league leaders Keuka College at 3:30pm.
