HAMBURG, N.Y. – For the second straight day, the Hilbert College softball team faced an AMCC opponent from central Pa. The Hawks played a tough opening game and had a chance to come-back but lost 2-0 in the top of the 7th. Hilbert (4-19, 0-8) gave up four late-game runs to suffer a 9-1 defeat to Mount Aloysius College 15-14, 6-2).
For the second consecutive day, both of Hilbert's opponents went the distance using one pitcher for both games.
The opening game ended in exciting fashion. The Mounties built a 2-0 lead, grabbing a run in the bottom of the 1
st and 4
th innings before the Hawks put two on the bags in scoring position with two outs in the top of the 7
th.
Crystal Hailey singled up-the-middle and
Wyann Jackson, returning to the line-up after taking a ball to her right cheek at her last at-bat, poked a hard-hit double to left center.
Brittany Cooley was grounded out as the game ended in the middle of the inning since Mount Aloysius was the home team.
Rachel Allen (3-8) pitched a complete game and finished with seven strike outs and a pair of walks while giving up four hits.
The second game went a quick pace. Each team scored in the by the start of the 3
rd inning, but the Mounties posted two runs in the bottom of the 3
rd and 4
th to take a 5-1 lead.
Hilbert's bats slowed while Mt. Aloysius' went for broke in the bottom of the 6
th. Two Hilbert errors and two Mountie hits transferred to four runs which built the 8-run rule and ended the game with only one out.
The Hawks finished with five hits earned by
Jenna Castricone,
Anndrea Quiroga,
Alexandria Wankel and
Amanda Hucksoll.
Mount Aloysius gathered eight hits but benefited from seven Hilbert errors for the AMCC victory.
Victoria Dzaak struck three out while giving up three earned runs off six hits.
Jaelyn Gotham relieved her in the fourth inning and struck two out.
The Hawks' softball team hits the road, but stays local for their next AMCC contest. Hilbert travels to McCarthy Park in Buffalo to battle cross-town rival Medaille College April 19 in a 3pm double header.
