MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Stepping out in their first outdoor experience this year, the Hilbert College women's lacrosse team suffered a 17-1 set-back at Morrisville State College. The Mustangs opened their season with a big offensive push, while the Hawks learn a new system with a new coaching staff.
Hilbert had to play catch-up the entire game. They trailed the hosts in all shooting categories but were competitive in ground balls (22-27) and draw controls (7-13).
Morrisville held a 28-4 shots on goal advantage and were almost 100% with clears (9-10). Hilbert struggled to continue an offensive attack, as they were 3-19 in clears and committed 26 turnovers.
Freshman
Allison Austin was credited with 11 saves in her rookie debut in goal for Hilbert. Cailin Dunphy finished with three saves for the green and white.
Nikki Schneider tallied Hilbert's only goal with 19:23 left in the second half. She finished a good-clear and converted a
Brooklyn Gormel - pass to the back of the net. Schneider also led the Hawks with five ground balls, won a pair of draw controls and was the only Hawk not charged with a turnover.
Gormel finished with four shots and won three ground balls and three controls in her first game at Hilbert.
Jennifer Cheatom was credited with four ground balls on defense.
Hilbert returns to action tomorrow when they face Sweet Briar (VA) for the first time in each program's history.
