BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's volleyball team had their hands full this afternoon when they stepped on the court in Tuttle North to face Brockport.
The Golden Eagles improved to 22-1 on the season with their straight-set victory. Then after a short break, the Hawks returned to action and faced Alfred University for the first time this season. Hilbert took the Saxons to five sets and fell 15-12 in the rubber match to suffer two losses on the day.
In the first set against Alfred, Hilbert jumped out to a 6-2 thanks to back-to-back kills by
Chelsea Adamski. The Hawks held that lead until four-straight points by the purple team knotted the game at 14 each. From there, the flow of the game was back and forth until the final tie-score 21-21 on an
Amanda Binder kill. Alfred won the next four straight markers to win 25-21.
Hilbert took an early lead in the second set and maintained a good lead (as much as seven points on several occasions) until the Saxons cut it to 22-19. The Hawks closed their win (25-20) with kills by
Anissa Quiroga,
Morgan Ott and
Amanda Binder.
AU exploded to a 7-0 advantage to start the third set before Binder's kill got the Hawks on the board. Four serves later, Hilbert was down 11-2 and that nine point separation stayed in Alfred's favor the rest of the way till the 25-13 win.
Morgan Ott's service ace in the fourth set gave Hilbert a 5-1 lead and at no point did Alfred challenge the Hawks. Ott was credited with another ace and joining her with a double in the set was
Amanda Binder.
Kamalei Lene also chipped in one ace as Hilbert won 25-17 to force extra play.
The Hawks found themselves down 8-3 in the start of the final set. After the teams swapped sides of the court, Hilbert rallied back to a 9-9 tie and each team traded points from there. AU's kill made it 10-9 and Binder posted a back-row kill for a 10-10 scorfe. A pair of purple kills and a Hilbert attack error gave Alfred a 13-10 lead, and the Hawks called timeout. Binder returned with another kill cutting the difference to two. An un-timely Hilbert blocking error gave the Saxons 14 points, but after a long and exciting rally, Binder picked-up another kill for 14-12. Alfred knocked the ball into the opposite side of the court for their set and match victory.
