Hawks Drop Two at Blue Devil Invitational

FREDONIA, N.Y. - The Hawks made the short trip to Fredonia State to take part in the 2014 Blue Devil Invitational. The invitational includes Buffalo State, Frostburg, Pitt-Bradford, RIT, the host Fredonia State, and Hilbert. The Hawks played two games this evening and will play two more on Saturday.

In the first match against Rochester Institute of Technology, the Hawks fell in three sets (25-15, 26-24, 25-14). A key difference in the loss was Hilbert's 13 receiving errors compared to RIT's one error. The Hawks also tallied 15 blocking errors and ten ball-handling errors, which proved to be the difference. RIT did not have any blocking errors, and only five ball-handling errors were called against them.

Amanda Binder led Hilbert with 12 kills of their 22 kills and notched on four blocks. Morgan Ott added another five kills for the Hawks, along with five digs. Kaitlyn Murphy recorded a team-high nine digs. Kayla Lewis chipped in 15 of Hilbert's 16 assists.

RIT was led by Sarah Szybist's fifteen kills and Arielle Pariente's 15 assists. The Tigers of RIT also finished with 38 kills.

Fredonia began the day by beating AMCC opponent Pitt-Bradford 3-0 (25-14- 25-11- 25-17) and continued their rout in a 3-0 win over Hilbert (25-16, 25-11, 25-21). The Hawks continued to struggle returning services, which was evident by their 12 receiving errors. Fredonia outhit Hilbert 37-15 for kills.

Binder continued her strong hitting, adding five more for the Hawks, along with two service aces. Lewis also had another 10 assists while Ott provided 10 digs. Jordan Botsford helped the Hawks with 11 digs and four kills.

The Blue Devils were led by Jess DiChristopher's 12 kills and seven blocks. Kelly Edinger contributed a game-high 34 assists.

The Blue Devil Invitational continues tomorrow for the Hawks as they face Frostburg at 1pm and Buffalo State at 3pm.
