HAMBURG, NY – It took one hundred and twelve minutes for the women's soccer team to claim their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory of the season. Freshman
Jackie Morgan earned her first Hilbert game-winning goal early in the second over-time period to push Hilbert to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in league. Freshman
Grace Adams made her first start in goal for the Hawks and came up clutch late in the game preventing a Mount Aloysius victory.
With only four minutes clicking off the clock, Mount Aloysius scored first. Neither team found a good look again until almost the 35
th minute when Morgan feed
Sarah Schmidt a perfect feed for her third goal of the season which tied the game heading into half time.
With just over 11 minutes into the second half, the Mounties Tracey Ecklund scored an easy goal and gave the edge back to the visitors.
Hilbert did not back down and played harder, fighting for every inch of space. Schmidt and Morgan connected one more time in the 83
rd minute, this time Morgan earning the rush of a score and knotted the game at 2-2. Mount Aloysius had a few late chances but a great save by Adams and wide shot sent the game to OT.
As each team played through the first overtime period, Hilbert's defensive back line played like a cement wall. Nothing was able to penetrate the box. After an early shot which was blocked by the defense,
Robbi Bailey and
Megan Van Norman double touched the ball to Morgan who finished a rainbow into the back of the net.
The Mounties outshot Hilbert (21-13) and held advantage in corner kicks (7-1) but some tough defense taking angles away led to misfires and good goal tending by Adams helped the Hawks celebrate the 3-2 win.
Prior to the start of the game, both teams, all coaches as well as family members in the stands released blue balloons in unity to fight bullying. The women's soccer team donned their road blues displaying their support for the cause.
Up next for Hilbert is a road game to North Buffalo (All High Stadium on Main Street) to face cross-town rival Medaille College October 2 at 7 pm.
