HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College hosted Houghton College and Alfred University September 14th in a tri-match at the Hafner Recreation Center. The Hawks split the afternoon matches, suffering a shutout loss to Houghton, and a 3-1 victory over Alfred University to close out the afternoon. Houghton swept all six sets played today and improved to 6-1 while Alfred fell to 2-8 in the non-conference matches.
Hilbert (4-6) was led by sophomore
Allegra Johnson who averaged 2.83 kills per set and 5.5 digs per set in the six sets she played. Hilbert averaged 10.43 kills per set and held their opponents to 9.57 ksp.
Freshman
Amanda Binder's .233 hitting percentage was impressive as she finished with 20 kills and only 6 hitting errors in her 60 attempts. Senior setter,
Shannon Memminger carried the main ball-distribution duties (54 assists) but also was credited with 30 digs (4.29 dps).
Houghton opened the day quickly with the 25-17, 25-10, 25-23, 3-set win over Hilbert. Binders' eight, Johnson's seven and
Chelsea Reischuck's six kills totaled 21 of the team's 28 kills. Johnson's 14,
Kayla Lewis' 13 and Memminger's 12 digs carried the defense.
Houghton then went 3-0 over Alfred before the Saxon's and Hawks closed out the afternoon.
Hilbert won the first set with ease, 25-16, but had to battle the next three sets to avoid a fifth set. Hilbert claimed a 25-21 game, Alfred took the extra session game 26-24, and almost let the fourth set get away.
The Hawks held a 10-5 lead early but then found themselves battling to play catch-up late in the game. The Saxons hitting errors and service errors gave Hilbert hope and the Hawks gained the momentum at the end to take a 25-23 set, and match, win.
Memminger assisted 33 times, with most passing going to Binder (12 kills) and Johnson (10 kills) and Reischuck. Johnson (19),
Jordan Botsford (13) and Reischuck (12) all reached for double-digit digs.
Botsford was credited with five service aces in her seven sets today.
Up next for Hilbert is a late afternoon, mid-week match at SUNYIT. The 5pm non-conference game is slated for September 18th in Marcy, NY.
