HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The women's volleyball team traveled to Houghton College October 25 and opened the Highlanders Invitational with back-to-back losses. The hosts took a 3-1 win over Hilbert before the Hawks dropped a tough 3-2 loss to SUNY Canton to finish the day. Hilbert moved to 10-18 with the two non-conference losses.
Hilbert had 18 more kills than Houghton (48-30), but gave away 28 points in errors as they played to a 25-20, 25-21, 19-25 and 25-21 four-set loss.
Amanda Binder reached for 15 kills (.520) to earn game-high honors.
Allegra Johnson chipped in 12 kills and 13 digs in the rematch loss.
Shannon Memminger was hot, passing for 44 assists.
Hilbert came back after a 25-14 loss to SUNY Canton and took sets two and three by identical 26-24 scores. Canton held on for a 25-19 win to force a fifth set. The Kangaroos made it a quick final winning the match 15-2 as they improved to a very impressive 26-4 overall record.
Statistically, each team balanced the other's efforts at the net (44-43 kills). Hilbert finished the match hitting (.204), but again gave away points. Hilbert committed 14 service errors while Canton burned the Hawks for 22 service aces.
Johnson and Binder again were Memminger's main targets as they finished with 13 and 10 kills respectively.
Ashley Viengmay was credited with 20 digs, just three more than
Jordan Botsford's defensive efforts. Memminger had 40 assists and five service aces, adding more numbers to her Hilbert-leading career totals.
The Hawks get back to business October 26 when they close-out the Invitational with games against Wells College at 12pm and Alfred State at 2pm.
