STEUBENVILLE, OH – After a slow start by both teams early, the Franciscan University women's soccer team clinched a 2-0 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win over Hilbert College October 12.
The Barons hit the Hawks up for two scores during a ten-minute stretch to open the second half as they improved to 8-5, and 2-2 while dropping Hilbert to 3-8 and 1-3.
Each team neutralized each other during the first period, with play staying mainly in the midfield area.
Franciscan scored their first goal after Jordan Byrley's run along the right side allowed her to attack goal. Byrley's shot skimmed past
Erin Smith and made it to the back of the net. Just ten minutes later, Byrley assisted on the final marker to give the Barons a home victory on Senior Day.
Franciscan outshot the Hawks (25-8) and held and 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. Smith was credited with 12 saves, eight coming in the second half.
Sarah Schmidt led the Hawks' offense with four shots and
Kaitlyn Layman added two.
Hilbert now prepares for their next AMCC game against Pitt-Bradford October 15th with a 3pm first kick.
