Emily Gawlak continued to do the dirty work on the floor for the women’s basketball team and has been honored with her third Hawk of the Week honor. A majority of Gawlak’s extra-effort play does not appear in the stat sheet, but she is a key contributor to the 2-0 Hawks last week.
The multi-sport athlete did not stop moving on the court and averaged 37 minutes a game while scoring 24 points and pulling down 22 rebounds. She also earned six assists, two steals and two blocks in a pair wins.
What doesn’t get tracked are all the plays broken up while on defense – the on-ball defensive harassment, the pass deflections in the quarter court or the full-court transition defense poking the ball out of bounds preventing easy scores.
The Buffalo native’s big game was in the team’s 32-point, Buffalo Cup victory and series sweep against Medaille. The 5-7 guard scored 15 points, (50% FG) and grabbed 12 rebounds while dishing three assists and swiping two steals. Then on Saturday, the Hawks posted their first AMCC victory in 13 seasons against La Roche College (74-54). Gawlak added nine points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocks in the 20-point win.
