THE OPPONENT
After a week one win over Maine Maritime Academy (62-6) the Hawks have gone winless in their last five contests, including three Empire 8 matchups, to drop their record to 1-5. Like Hilbert, Hartwick's last two games have come against St. John Fisher (lost 56-0) and SUNY Brockport (lost 53-0) where both Hawks squads suffered similar fates.
The Hawks are averaging just under 20 points a game this campaign, with much of the team's production coming through the air. Quarterback James Sobol is completing 40% of his attempts for 776 yards and 5 touchdowns, while also throwing 9 interceptions. On the ground, Carlvin McDonald handles the bulk of the work for Hartwick. The senior running back has totaled 205 yards on 55 attempts with a lone score on the ground. Since scoring 118 combined points in the first three weeks of the seasons, Hartwick has been held to 7 total points in the team's last three matchups.
Defensively, the Hawks are giving up over 43 points a game this year while allowing over 400 yards a contest to their opponents. Benjamin Kirkland (38), Randall Dennis (33), and Brennan McNeilly (30) lead the way in tackles for the Hawks, while Dennis, Owen Lawler, Michael Vurchio, and Jules Pierre all have a pair of interceptions on the year for a unit averaging more than one takeaway a game.
